GEM Dust Hay Preservative & Mold Inhibitor for Forage

GEM Dust is a proven hay preservative and mold inhibitor designed for forage baled at 18–25% moisture. Developed by GEM Silage Products and trusted by Canadian producers, GEM Dust helps protect forage quality by reducing mold growth, minimizing heating, and preserving valuable nutrients during storage.

When hay is baled at higher moisture levels, mold can quickly become a serious issue. Mold growth generates heat, carbon dioxide, and excess moisture, leading to spoilage, nutrient loss, and dusty hay that can negatively impact livestock health and feed consistency. GEM Dust works by reducing mold populations in alfalfa, timothy, and mixed forages, helping maintain the nutritional value your livestock depend on.

By inhibiting mold development and reducing spoilage, GEM Dust allows producers to bale with confidence while improving feed quality, consistency, and storage stability. It is an effective forage additive for farms looking to protect their hay investment and deliver cleaner, higher-quality feed throughout the feeding season.

What Is a Hay Preservative?

A hay preservative is any product applied to forage at baling to control mold and spoilage in hay that's baled before it has fully dried down. Without one, hay generally needs to be under about 18% moisture before it's safe to bale. Anything wetter risks heating, mold, and even spontaneous combustion in storage.

Hay preservatives generally fall into two categories:

  • Organic-acid preservatives (typically propionic acid-based) lower the pH of the forage directly, which slows mold growth chemically.
  • Bacterial inoculant preservatives, like GEM Dust, introduce beneficial bacteria (Bacillus, Pediococcus, and Lactobacillus species) that ferment sugars in the hay into lactic acid. That naturally produced lactic acid does the same job of suppressing mold, without needing a strong acid product.

Because GEM Dust works this way, it can be applied at 18-25% moisture, is non-corrosive to baling equipment, and, since lactic acid is naturally occurring, is safe for livestock and people to be around.

How GEM Dust Protects Hay & Forage from Mold

Mold growth begins quickly when moisture and heat are present inside stored bales. GEM Dust works by creating an environment that slows microbial activity, reducing the conditions mold needs to develop.

This protection helps:

  • Maintain forage palatability
  • Reduce dry matter losses
  • Preserve protein and energy content
  • Minimize heating during storage

The result is cleaner, more consistent feed that supports livestock health and performance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep hay from getting moldy?

Mold can be detrimental to your hay quality, leading to waste and posing a risk to your livestock, but there are effective ways to prevent mold growth. GEM Dust is a powerful hay preservative that can be applied to your forage to protect it from mold growth at moisture levels of 18-25%. It's developed and manufactured in Central Alberta and used by hay and forage producers across Alberta and the rest of Canada.

What forms are GEM Dust available in?

GEM Dust is available in two forms: soluble and granular, each suited for different application methods.

GEM Dust Plus Granular is a dry formulation that can be applied directly to forage, making application convenient and straightforward. GEM Dust Plus Soluble is designed to be mixed with water before application, providing flexibility for ag operations equipped for liquid treatments. Both forms effectively inhibit mold growth and preserve hay quality, and both are stocked through our warehouse network across Canada.

What are the advantages of using GEM Dust?

GEM Dust allows you to bale at moisture levels between 18-25%, reducing your reliance on perfect weather conditions, which matters most during Alberta's short and often unpredictable haying season. Its lactic acid formula is safe for animals and people, while the granular form is easy to apply without the need for mixing or hauling water. It also helps preserve the nutrient value of alfalfa and timothy hay, ensuring high-quality feed for livestock operations from Central Alberta to the rest of the country.

Where can I purchase GEM Dust?

GEM Dust can be purchased through GEM Silage Products' network of over 40 dealers across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. We're headquartered in Red Deer County, in Central Alberta, with five warehouses stocking product across Canada. Contact us to find a dealer near you.

How much hay preservative do I need per ton of hay?

GEM Dust Plus Granular is applied at 250 g per metric tonne of forage before baling. GEM Dust Plus Soluble is mixed at 5 g of product with 2 litres of clean water per metric tonne of green matter. A single 20 kg pail of Granular covers roughly 90 tons of forage, or about 110-115 large square bales. These application rates are the same whether you're baling in Central Alberta or anywhere else across Canada.

Is hay preservative safe for horses and other livestock?

GEM Dust's active ingredients are lactic acid producing bacteria (Bacillus, Pediococcus, and Lactobacillus species), which are safe for animals and people to be around. It's formulated for common forage types, including alfalfa, timothy, grass hay, and mixed blends, fed on beef, dairy, and mixed livestock operations across Canada. If you're feeding horses specifically or have an animal with particular sensitivities, contact us and we can walk through your situation directly.

Do I still need to wait for hay to dry before baling if I use a preservative?

No, that's the main advantage. Without a preservative, hay generally needs to dry to below about 18% moisture before it's safe to bale, which means watching the forecast and often losing quality while you wait for the right window, a real risk during Alberta's short baling season. GEM Dust is formulated for baling at 18-25% moisture, so you can bale sooner, reduce leaf loss from over-dried hay, and worry less about a surprise rain shower undoing days of curing.

How much does hay preservative cost?

Pricing depends on the form (Granular vs. Soluble), volume, and your nearest dealer. Contact us or use the quote form below and we'll connect you with pricing through our dealer network across Alberta and the rest of Canada.
